WHY AUROVILLE?

I just came to Auroville because some one told me that for my first trip to India I could learn there how to travel around the country fairly easily and safely alone. I felt at home in Auroville immediately. I traveled for five months and did not return for seven years. When I did return again I felt again welcomed and at home.

On my first visit I knew nothing about the philosophy behind Auroville, its raison d’être, or who founded it or when. The principal of the community is that humans are evolutionary beings and that it is only by a change of their consciousness that they can truly create a better world. It attracts individuals from around the world who feel attuned to its ideal of human unity dependent on the change of ones consciousness.

I decided to make my home here in 2005 for a few simple reasons. The founder said, “Everyone learns only by experience”. From my visits here I knew I would be challenged every day being forced to learn through our required service in building the city.
